Ice Cream

It may be a gorgeous 74 degrees today but we all know Missouri weather will have Columbia back into the 90s next week. To help you prepare, here is a list of local favorites where you can enjoy some delicious cool-down treats (plus more, because who doesn’t love dessert?!).

Andy’s Frozen Custard

A local Missouri chain, Andy’s offers custom concretes, malts, sundaes, shakes, multiple seasonal favorites, and more! Currently in season: Cookie Casanova Sundae, Blueberry Concrete, Strawberry Shortcake Sundae, and Blackberry Concrete.

Blenders Smoothies + Juice
308 S. 9th St.
At Blenders you can find 30+ specialty smoothies like Devil’s Icebox (strawberry, Greek yogurt, banana), Run Forrest Run (cold press coffee, vanilla, choice of banana or blackberry), and Bloody Barry (cranberry, raspberry, strawberry, blueberry), along with fresh juice, wheat pretzels, and more. Plus, it’s a local Columbia business!

Buck’s Ice Cream
1306 Rollins
Buck’s is the official ice cream of the Missouri Tigers and is made fresh on campus by food science students. They have a lot of tasty flavors but Tiger Stripe is what they’re known for (try it, you’ll see why)!

Know what goes great with Buck’s Ice Cream? Hot Box Cookies! Along with a wide variety of freshly-baked cookies, Hot Box offers shakes and ice cream sandwiches made with the local ice cream. Order a box as a gift or just send them to yourself – we won’t judge.

Peggy Jean’s Pies

Peggy Jean’s Pies took a 10-year break but they’re back! Take a look at their huge selection of fresh, handmade pies.. I could definitely go for peanut butter or key lime right now!

Randy’s Frozen Custard
3304 W. Broadway Business Park Ct.
Randy’s is Columbia’s longest-running custard shop and boasts a huge selection of specialty concretes. They’re also located right next to Shakespeare’s West, perfect for a family night of pizza and ice cream!

Sparky’s Homemade Ice Cream
21 S. 9th St.
A local favorite, Sparky’s has all kinds of flavors (including ADULT ONLY options) like honeydew melon, Oreo Speedwagon, gooey butter cake, Boone Olive Oil Company’s Blueberry Balsamic Vinegar, Les Bourgeois and Ghirardelli, Guinness cake batter, and SO MUCH MORE. Check out their whiteboard for current flavors.

U Knead Sweets

Another locally owned and operated shop, U Knead Sweets makes fresh-daily sweet treats. (Did you SEE the cake at the top of this post?) You can find seasonal items along with the usual scones, cupcakes, macaroons, croissants, and more.  Talk to Mrs. Shih if you’re in need of a special occasion treat!

The Velvet Cupcake

The Velvet Cupcake is located downtown in The Tiger Hotel, and their cupcakes are handcrafted and baked from scratch. Try their namesake “velvet cupcake,” the maple bacon cupcake, or one of the other many flavors, including gluten-free!

Yogoluv offers many flavors of frozen yogurt and even more toppings. Load yours up with fruit, candy, chocolate, cereal, syrups, whatever you want!

While Main Squeeze does feature a vegetarian menu, it’s not just for vegetarians! Stop by and try one of their unique fresh juice drinks or smoothies, like the Ginger Tonic (apple, celery, lemon, and ginger) or the Berry Berry Good smoothie (grape, blueberry, strawberry, and raspberry).

A small ice cream parlor in The District (downtown Columbia), Sparky’s features awesomely unique rotating flavors including mango strawberry almond, chocolate banana Tabasco, dark and stormy (for those 21 and older, it includes rum and ginger beer), blackberry goat cheese, and dark pepper dark chocolate espresso. Don’t worry, for those of you who would prefer a safer choice, Sparky’s also has “normal” flavors like vanilla bean, chocolate, cookies and cream, and butter pecan.

A bar specializing in frozen cocktails, Trops is the place to be (as long as you’re 21)! There are 2 locations in Columbia: one on the south side of town and one downtown in the District. While Trops does serve beer and mixed drinks, they are known for their frozen drinks such as the Tiger Paw (peach schnapps, rum, pineapple juice, and orange juice), ’57 Chevy (rum, gin, vodka, sloe gin, and mai tai blend), and many others.

Eckles Hall, University of Missouri | 573-882-1088

Buck’s is known as the official ice cream of the Mizzou Tigers and is even made fresh on the University of Missouri’s campus by food science students. Their typical hours are Monday – Friday noon-5 (and Saturdays during warmer months), but it’s completely worth it to find time to go just for a taste of their tiger stripe or Mizzou gold ice cream.

Yogoluv features a buffet of frozen yogurt and topping choices, and the price depends on how much your bowl of deliciousness weighs. The flavors are rotated but the basic choices of chocolate and vanilla are available along with toppings including candies, syrups, fruits, cereals, and almost anything else you’d want on your frozen yogurt.
