The Centralia Historical Society is housed in a Victorian (Queen Anne Style) house that was built in 1904 by Centralia Pharmacist, R. L. Hope and his wife Belle Downing Hope. In 1908, it was purchased by Charles Early family, bank president. The A.B. Chance family purchased the home in 1923 and lived here until his death in 1949.
In the early 1950’s, Mrs. Chance moved to a home on Sunrise Circle and the Chance Company used this house as their guest facilities. In 1974, the Chance Foundation took title to the house and contacted area residents about using it for a Museum. This marked the beginning of the Centralia Historical Society Museum, a not for profit corporation.
As you tour this gracious house look for elaborate details such as the carved woodwork, leaded, curved, beveled and stained glass windows, the built in china cabinets and the butler’s serving window.
