Ragtag

As it gets colder, you may be tempted to pass on date night so that you don’t have to brave the frigid temps, snow, and everything else Missouri winters tend to bring. We don’t blame you – it can be hard to find the strength to emerge from your warm pile of blankets (we’ve all been there). But just in case you start getting a little stir-crazy, here are some ideas for a winter date night in Columbia:

stephens lake park sledding

Sledding is not just for kids. Throw on a bunch of layers, grab a sled, and head to opens in a new windowStephens Lake Park. The hill on the east side of the lake is a popular sledding spot, and there’s typically a bonfire going at Collins Shelter when there is snow on the ground. You can also ice skate on the lake when the ice is deemed thick enough – there will be signs up and updates from opens in a new windowParks and Recreation when skating is allowed. When you decide it’s time to thaw out, stop by opens in a new windowLakota for your favorite seasonal drink and some hot soup.

food at Gunter Hans in Columbia, MO - pretzel bites, waffle, beer

Mix up your regular ‘dinner and a movie’ date night! Head over to Gunter Hans for Bretzels and Liege Waffles before a movie at opens in a new windowRagtag. Just because you ventured out of the house doesn’t mean you can’t hang out on a couch. Couches = cozy. Check the website for information on current movies.

Magic Tree 2010

No Columbia winter is complete without a visit to the opens in a new windowMagic Tree at the Village of Cherry Hill. Get some photos and then warm up at opens in a new windowFlat Branch Pub for dinner. Grab a beer (see what’s on tap at Flat Branch), and order your favorite. If you’ve never been, we suggest the Green Chili Chicken Fingers, the Flat Branch Burger, and the Stout Brownie Sundae. Yum. [Once the Magic Tree is gone, opens in a new windowhere are some other stops you can make instead.]

bowling

Two words: opens in a new windowLazer Lanes. They have bowling, laser tag, an arcade, BUMPER CARS, food, a bar… what more could you want? Make a contest out of it – whoever loses Lazer tag buys the winner fried Oreos (speaking of food, we want everything on the opens in a new windowmenu). If the onsite cafe is closed, go next door to Jose Jalapenos for cheese dip and tacos. Check out their drink specials online.

Les Bourgeois A-frame Restaurant

If you’re looking for a quick getaway, Rocheport is the place. Full of small-town charm, there are plenty of antique and gift shops and of course, the winery. Treat yourself to lunch or dinner at the Les Bourgeois opens in a new windowBlufftop Bistro or pick out a favorite wine to take home with you at the opens in a new windowTasting Room.

Ta-da!

Sometimes it can be difficult to describe our favorite parts of Columbia. One of those things is opens in a new windowRagtag Cinema. Why? Because it’s so much more than just a theater! Here’s a little recap of my latest trip to Hittsville (the complex that houses Ragtag, Uprise Bakery and 9th Street Video).

After seeing Twenty Feet from Stardom at this year’s True/False Film Festival, I decided that my mom needed to see it. She had never even been inside Ragtag, so I figured it was the perfect opportunity to give her the full Hittsville experience. I bought our tickets online (so easy!) and planned for us to have dinner at Uprise before the show.

Mom was pleasantly surprised at how big the interior was, with lots of open seating and people studying mixed with people enjoying happy hour. We both opted for the bacon, apple and cheddar sandwich for dinner and it did not disappoint. Freshly baked bread surrounded smoky bacon, crisp apples and melted cheese. There’s also always a great variety of beer on tap; I opted for a pear cider. We also both chose a cookie for during the film. That’s right, you can take your food and drinks right into the theater!

Ragtag is home to two theaters, Big Ragtag and Little Ragtag. Little Ragtag is a collection of couches and chairs and has a more casual atmosphere. We settled into Big Ragtag’s theater seats and enjoyed Twenty Feet from Stardom, which chronicles the history of the back up singer in musical culture.

After the movie, Mom couldn’t stop talking about it. I think I’ve created a new Ragtag fan.

Ragtag Cinema and Uprise Bakery

Ta-da!

This local treasure in downtown Columbia is a favorite hangout for everyone from college students cramming for a final to retirees enjoying a documentary. With three businesses (Ragtag Cinema, Uprise Bakery and 9th Street Video) all housed in one complex, this place is always bustling!

With a diverse schedule of independent films, documentaries and series of shorts, opens in a new windowRagtag Cinema has established itself as Columbia’s arthouse theater. Two theater spaces allow Ragtag to show Oscar nominated shorts in one room and a football documentary in the other. Ragtag also hosts a variety of other events each year including concerts, trivia nights and, most notably, serves as the home base for the opens in a new windowTrue/False Film Festival. Check out the opens in a new windowcalendar to find out what’s playing this weekend.

As if an amazing, one-of-a-kind theater wasn’t enough, opens in a new windowUprise Bakery is ready for you to eat (and drink!) through your film. Everything at Uprise is made from scratch with the best (often local) ingredients. Start your day at Uprise with coffee and a delicious homemade pastry, then come back for a sandwich and a beer during your movie. And yes, you can take that beer and sandwich into the theater with you!

So put it on your to-do list when you come to Columbia, to at least make a stop by Ragtag and Uprise. We’re confident this Uniquely Columbia spot will fast become one of your favorites too.
