Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind: 30 Plays in 60 Minutes or TMLMTBGB for short, is the longest-running show in Chicago history running 50 weeks per year from 1988 to the end of 2016. Over its 28-year run, the show and the Neo-Futurists ensemble garnered a cult following across the United States and now have active troupes as far as New York and San Francisco! The original show was authored, directed, and performed by Neo-Futurist ensemble members who were tasked with writing between two and twelve new plays every week (decided by the roll of dice).

Our production comes from a collection of more than 100 short and micro plays from the Neo-Futurists’ archives, and like the original, CEC’s actors must perform 30 plays in only 60 minutes. Each play runs the gamut — among the things you may experience: musical, Shakespeare, slapstick, confession, agit-prop, audience interaction, autobiography, and performance art! Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind celebrates all that is theater and aims to create a connection between audience and performer unlike any show ever produced.

Greg Allen, founder of the Neo-Futurists believes, “that you can, in fact, write a two-minute play which has just as much depth and humor and poignancy as something that takes five acts, 20 characters, 15 set changes, and two hours and ten minutes to complete.”  Perhaps – dare we say it? – we can achieve even more.
