We welcome back to the Jazz Series alto saxophonist Bobby Watson, one of our most cherished artists and a fan favorite. Watson’s “pedigree” is second to none: Panama Francis, George Coleman, Max Roach, Art Blakey… Now into his fourth decade as a musician and bandleader, he has also served as an important educator, overseeing the UMKC Jazz Studies Program since 2000.
Watson arrives with his newest project, Made In America (Smoke Sessions), the recording consisting of a series of original compositions whose themes are centered on lesser-known African-Americans. The ever-inquisitive Watson continues to seek out new avenues of expression – and different musical combinations and colleagues. He brings with him an outstanding triumvirate led by bassist Curtis Lundy, whose musical rapport with Watson dates to the early 1980s. Lundy’s rhythm mates are a pair of jazz stalwarts, pianist Stephen Scott and the refreshingly original drummer, Lewis Nash.
