Pianist Billy Childs returns to the Jazz Series after three seasons, again arriving with a classic quartet – however it’s a completely different band. Having gained prominence for his GRAMMY®-winning interpretations of Laura Nyro’s work on his 2014 release, the Los Angeles native has been the recipient of numerous significant awards: a Guggenheim Fellowship, Doris Duke Chamber Music America Composer’s Grant and The American Academy of Arts & Letters, among others.
Now president of the Chamber Music America, Childs’ beginnings include stints with Freddie Hubbard, J.J. Johnson, Joe Henderson and Wynton Marsalis not to mention his work with Steve Wilson Esperanza Spaulding, Chris Potter, Brian Blade, Wayne Shorter and Dianne Reeves.
A tremendously thoughtful and engaging performer and composer, this quartet should be stylish in its approach and steeped in bebop and beyond.
