Short-Term Rentals

The Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau is working with other City of Columbia departments to better understand how Short-Term Rentals are used in Columbia. Please refer to the information and links below to learn more about upcoming public information meetings and to provide your feedback.

What is the CVB?

The Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is a department of the City of Columbia and is the official destination marketing organization for Boone County. The CVB promotes Columbia as a destination through sales, marketing, and destination development.

What is a Short-Term Rental?

A Short-Term Rental is defined as a dwelling rented out on an online platform via websites including, but not limited to, AirBnB.com or VRBO.com. Short-Term Rentals are increasingly being used around the world as the lodging-of-choice for many travelers.

Public Information Meetings

The CVB and Community Development Department will be hosting two additional public information meetings regarding Short-Term Rentals in Columbia:

Tuesday, April 17th at 3:00 p.m.

Thursday, April 19th at 6:00 p.m.

Both meetings will take place at the Walton Building, 300 S. Providence Rd. Columbia, MO 65203 in the Community Room. The meetings will include short presentations from CVB and Community Development staff along with time for open discussion and questions. The content and format for each meeting are expected to be the same and residents and interested parties are encouraged to attend one or both meetings.

Presently, the City of Columbia does not tax or regulate short-term rentals beyond a voluntary health and safety inspection. The City Council has directed staff to evaluate the potential of requiring business licensure and applying the city’s existing 5 percent hotel and motel sales tax. Additional health and safety regulations and neighborhood protection standards may be considered. The public is invited to learn more about short-term rental programs in other municipalities and provide feedback on considerations for the city.  Any draft regulations and proposals to emerge from this public input process shall be subject to additional public input and hearing by the City Council.
